FRANKLIN, Tennessee — Stephanie Askew Bergmeyer, a respected Tennessee attorney, public servant, and devoted mother whose legal career was dedicated to serving the people of Tennessee, passed away on July 4, 2026, at the age of 43.
Born on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1983, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Stephanie built a life defined by professional excellence, meaningful friendships, and an unwavering commitment to family. Her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, classmates, and lifelong friends who remember her as an exceptional attorney, loyal companion, and compassionate presence.
Stephanie Askew Bergmeyer pursued a distinguished legal career rooted in public service after earning degrees from Clemson University and Vanderbilt Law School.
Throughout her career, she served the State of Tennessee in several significant legal positions. She began as an Assistant Attorney General in the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, where she worked on matters affecting the public interest. She later became an Administrative Law Judge for the Tennessee Secretary of State, before concluding her career as Senior Associate Counsel for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).
A Mother Above All Else
While Stephanie achieved notable professional success, those closest to her say her greatest source of pride was her daughter, Natalie Mae Bergmeyer.
Family members described Stephanie as a loving and devoted mother who cherished every opportunity to create meaningful memories with Natalie. Whether exploring new destinations, learning about history together, or simply enjoying everyday moments, motherhood remained the defining joy of her life.
Her family shared that Stephanie’s love extended beyond Natalie to her parents, siblings, nieces, extended relatives, and a close circle of lifelong friends who stood beside her through every chapter of life.
Outside the courtroom, Stephanie embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity.
She had a passion for travel, believing that every journey offered an opportunity to learn. Among her favorite family memories was a reunion in Whistler, Canada, where relatives gathered during the summer before her passing. She also traveled extensively with Natalie, visiting destinations including England, France, and New York, often combining their adventures with visits to historic landmarks.
She loved spending time on the water, boating, relaxing at the beach, and making lasting memories with those she loved.
Among the most heartfelt was a remembrance from longtime friend Lesley Powers, who reflected on a friendship that began in sixth grade and endured through adulthood.
“I met Stephanie in sixth grade. She was crazy smart and had the curliest hair I’d ever seen.”
Powers described how Stephanie remained a constant presence through life’s defining milestones—from college years and shared homes to weddings, family celebrations, and personal hardships.
“She is embedded in the tapestry of who I am.”
Reflecting on Stephanie’s greatest legacy, Powers added:
“I see her face when I look at her beautiful daughter, and I know she’ll live on through her. That’s her legacy. She loved being a Mom.”

Stephanie’s family announced that a Celebration of Life was held on August 1, 2026, at Eastern Flank Battlefield Park in Franklin, Tennessee.
She is survived by:
- Her beloved daughter, Natalie Mae Bergmeyer
- Her parents, Steven Webb Askew and Ronette Anderson Askew
- Her sister, Marie Trenhaile, and brother-in-law Jeremy Trenhaile
- Her nieces, Ava and Madelyn Trenhaile
- Uncles Jeff Anderson and Robert Askew
- Cousins Christina Canter, Brad Anderson, Elizabeth Nations, and Russell Askew, along with many extended family members, friends, and colleagues.
