He graduated from Mishicot High School with the Class of 1997, beginning a career defined by mechanical expertise and a strong work ethic.

At the time of his death, Ruether worked as a mechanic with Highway Landscapers in Little Chute. Throughout his career, he also held positions with Robinson Inc., All State Rigging, Quality State Trucking, and several other employers, earning a reputation as someone who could solve difficult mechanical problems while always being willing to lend assistance to coworkers and friends.

Those closest to him said he never hesitated to stop what he was doing to help someone repair equipment, troubleshoot a problem, or simply offer encouragement.
